This was my favorite stop on my trip through Spain. Walking through the Nasrid palaces was incredible. I loved seeing the detailed stucco, colorful tiles, and Lion’s Court fountain. Our tour guide was amazing! He explained the history of the sultans and the significance of each room as we walked. We also spent some time in the Alcazaba fortress towers and got the best views over the city of Granada. I highly recommend this if you’re in Málaga!
My wife and I had the best time! We are nature lovers, so aside from the Alhambra itself (which is amazing) the Generalife gardens were our favorite part. We also explored the Nasrid palaces and loved the intricate ceilings and walls. Having a guide made it super easy to understand what we’re seeing and the history behind each place. The bus ride from Málaga made the day easy, and we loved not having to worry about the logistics. All in all, a day well spent!

EXPLORE THE ALHAMBRA PALACE

He added three towers, including the Torre de la Vela (Watch Tower), along with fortified walls. It served as a military stronghold for centuries. From the top, enjoy views of the city center and the Sierra Nevada mountains. After the guided tour, you’ll have some free time to explore the Alhambra at your own pace. Interesting Facts about the Alhambra Palace
- The Alhambra is also called the Red Fortress. This is because “Alhambra” means red or vermilion in Arabic. Its walls and towers appear reddish due to the iron-rich clay used in their construction.
- Different social groups had their own corridors in the Alhambra. The sultan, his family, staff, and scribes all used separate paths.
- Many walls of the Alhambra are covered in inscriptions. They include Qur’an verses and poems meant to inspire beauty and spirituality.
- The tilework in the Alhambra follows strict mathematical patterns to reflect Allah’s grandeur. However, the designers left one hidden flaw in the design. According to them, complete perfection was a defiance of God.
- Originally, water was carried to the Alhambra from the hills in buckets. Later, a hydraulic system was developed to supply water to the palace and gardens.
- The Court of Myrtles in the Palace features a reflecting pool. It was constructed to serve as a symbol of power, but also to cool the Palace interiors!
- The decorations in the Alhambra were made from carved plaster, not stone. They also used tile mosaics for arches and columns.
