Gibraltar: The secret fortress
Gibraltar played a key role during World War II as a secret British fortress. Engineers dug secret tunnels in the Rock of Gibraltar. They planned for a team to remain if the Rock was taken. The plan was that this small group would live in secret. They would watch enemy movements and send coded messages. The tunnels, many of which were unused, stayed hidden from the public for decades. They were rediscovered in the 1990s. Today, visitors can explore parts of these tunnels and learn about military history.
Fun fact: The Rock has over 34 miles (55 kilometers) of tunnels, making it one of the most tunnel-dense places in the world. This makes it a unique mix of natural wonder and historic defense.
